Swine Influenza

It has been all in the news, recent outbreaks of Swine Influenza and Mexico has resulted in a number of concerns. The following information is gathered from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines.

What is Swine Influenza?
This is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by Type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs. While Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. The classical swine flu virus was first isolated from a pig in 1930.

How does swine flu spread?
Influenza viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human infection with flu viruses from pigs are mostly likely to occur when people are in close proximity to invected pigs. It is also important to note that human-to-human transmission of the swine flu can occur. This is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people. Coughing, sneezing and touching items with flu viruses on it then touching one's mouth or noze can infect a person.

What to do to keep from getting the flu?
The first line of defense is to wash your hands. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress and drink plenty of fluids as well as eat nutritious food and you can help your chances of getting the flu to a minimum. When possible, try to avoid contact with people who are sick.

Surfaces that are most likely to be sources of contamination.
Germs are spread when one person touches something that is contaminated and then touches the eyes, nose or mouth. These same germs are also spread through the air in the dropletts from a cough or sneeze.
